The surging valuation of private artificial intelligence firms is injecting billions in paper profits into the quarterly reports of major technology conglomerates, distorting the true picture of corporate earnings power. According to CNBC, if investment gains from stakes in companies like Anthropic and OpenAI were excluded, the earnings growth story for the S&P 500 in the second quarter of 2026 would appear significantly less strong. The aggregate unrealized gains reported by a handful of megacap tech firms surpassed $18 billion for the quarter, a figure that masks more modest underlying operational performance across the broader index.
The prevalence of mark-to-market gains on strategic venture investments within quarterly earnings is a recent phenomenon with limited precedent. During the dot-com bubble, some technology firms reported gains from cross-holdings in other public tech stocks, but the scale and concentration in a few private, non-core assets today are unprecedented. The current macro backdrop features elevated interest rates, with the 10-year Treasury yield holding above 4.5%, which typically pressures equity valuations and highlights the importance of sustainable operating income.
The immediate catalyst is the latest quarterly earnings season for Q2 2026. Several trillion-dollar market cap companies, which made early-stage investments in leading AI labs, are now required to report the fair value of those holdings each quarter. A series of massive private funding rounds for Anthropic and OpenAI throughout 2025 and 2026, which valued each company above $100 billion, triggered dramatic upward revaluations. A key limitation is that these are unrealized, non-cash gains subject to high volatility. The counter-argument is that these stakes represent strategic assets with long-term value, and their marking reflects real economic potential. Active fund managers are increasingly scrutinizing adjusted earnings metrics, while passive index funds automatically buy the inflated market caps, creating a divergence in flow. The next major catalyst is the Q3 2026 earnings season, beginning in mid-October. The Federal Open Market Committee's meeting on September 17, 2026, could alter the discount rate used to value private companies, affecting future quarterly marks.
Analysts will watch the price-to-earnings ratio of the S&P 500 excluding estimated AI gains; a break above 21x on this adjusted basis could signal overvaluation. Support for the technology sector rests on its core operating growth rate holding above 5%. If operating growth falls below this level while paper gains persist, the divergence may trigger a sharp sector correction as investors question quality.
These gains directly increase reported earnings per share, a key driver of stock valuation. Higher EPS can lead to a lower price-to-earnings ratio, making the stock appear cheaper and potentially attracting buyers. However, sophisticated investors often apply a "haircut" or multiple discount to these non-cash earnings, valuing them less than recurring operating profit. A realized gain is recorded when an investment is actually sold for more than its book value, generating cash for the company. The key distinction with the current AI situation is the asset class—illiquid private company stakes—and the concentration within a few firms that are not primarily investment vehicles, blurring the line between operating and investing performance.
