Intrepid Potash reported third-quarter 2026 net income from continuing operations of $1.7 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, on sales of $51.0 million, the Denver-based mineral company announced on 3 November 2026. The profit figure more than doubled from $0.7 million, or $0.05 per diluted share, in the same quarter a year earlier, while sales were roughly flat against $50.8 million. Adjusted EBITDA rose to $11.7 million from $10.7 million. Intrepid also lifted full-year 2026 Trio production guidance to 305,000-315,000 tons from 295,000-305,000 tons.
Context — why Intrepid's Q3 margin mix matters now
Intrepid's third-quarter gross margin held at $10.0 million, unchanged from the prior-year quarter. That flat headline number hides two opposing moves inside the segments. Trio gross margin climbed about 33%, to $5.8 million from $4.4 million, while potash gross margin fell to $3.6 million from $6.3 million. Trio carried the quarter; potash dragged on it.
The potash decline traces to cost, not price. Average net realized potash price rose 3% to $394 per ton, but potash segment cost of goods sold per ton jumped to $384 from $340, a function of sales mix weighted toward the company's higher-cost sites. Intrepid said it delayed the start of the Moab harvest season to allow additional evaporation, which pushed quarterly potash production down to 34,000 tons from 41,000 tons.
Trio's improvement runs the other way. Production rose 19% to 83,000 tons and Trio COGS per ton fell to $224 from $257, helped by better operating performance at the East mine. Average Trio net realized price edged up to $408 per ton from $402. Those two lines — cheaper tons and slightly higher prices — explain the entire 33% margin gain.
The catalyst for the raised guidance is operational rather than market-driven. Intrepid credited a new continuous miner commissioned at the East Mine earlier in 2026, plus longer operating hours per shift and mill improvements supporting granular and premium product output. The company also pointed to stronger crop prices improving grower sentiment ahead of the fall application season, and said it expects those conditions to carry into spring 2027 planting.
Data — Intrepid's Q3 2026 numbers against the prior year
| Metric | Q3 2026 | Q3 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Sales from continuing operations | $51.0M | $50.8M |
| Gross margin | $10.0M | $10.0M |
| Net income from continuing operations | $1.7M | $0.7M |
| Adjusted EBITDA | $11.7M | $10.7M |
| Potash production volume | 34k tons | 41k tons |
| Trio production volume | 83k tons | 70k tons |
| Potash net realized price per ton | $394 | $381 |
| Trio net realized price per ton | $408 | $402 |
The nine-month picture is stronger than the quarter. Sales from continuing operations reached $216.4 million against $212.9 million, gross margin rose to $44.4 million from $35.6 million, and net income from continuing operations more than doubled to $11.0 million from $5.5 million. Adjusted net income for the nine months was $17.4 million, or $1.31 per diluted share, versus $8.8 million and $0.66.
Cash flow from continuing operations was negative $4.8 million in the quarter, an improvement on the $5.6 million used a year earlier. Intrepid noted the third quarter is seasonally its weakest for profitability and its heaviest for working capital, as inventory builds ahead of fall fertilizer application. For the nine months, cash flow from continuing operations was $50.5 million, up from $37.3 million.
Balance sheet strength is the standout. As of 30 September 2026, Intrepid held $152.3 million in cash and cash equivalents, $9.1 million in short-term investments and $5.6 million in long-term investments — $161.4 million of net cash and short-term investments. It carried no borrowings and $0.5 million in outstanding letters of credit under a $150 million revolver maturing in March 2031, leaving $149.5 million available.
Analysis — what Intrepid's capital plan signals for fertilizer equities
Intrepid raised full-year 2026 capital expenditure guidance to roughly $45 million from roughly $40 million. Third-quarter capex was $11.3 million and nine-month capex $24.9 million, up from $7.7 million and $18.8 million respectively. The company plans a further $16 million of Trio investment in 2027 and about $20 million in potash mine development, targeting annual internal rates of return of approximately 30%.
The 2027 targets are specific. Intrepid expects Trio production of 305,000-315,000 tons for 2026, then approximately 320,000-330,000 tons in 2027, describing a roadmap for roughly 100,000 tons of additional annual capacity beyond that with modest further investment. Potash production is guided to 310,000-330,000 tons in 2027, up from a three-year average the company did not quantify.
The counter-argument sits in potash. Mix-driven cost inflation lifted segment COGS per ton to $384 from $340, and production fell year over year. If higher-cost sites keep dominating shipments, price gains of the 3% magnitude seen this quarter will not cover the cost gap. Intrepid's own guidance implies it expects the mine development spending to fix that, but the benefit is a 2027 story, not a 2026 one.
Share repurchases show management's read on valuation. Intrepid bought roughly 22,000 shares for about $0.8 million during the third quarter, then a further 66,000 shares for about $2.1 million between quarter-end and 31 October 2026 — roughly 88,000 shares total under an authorization the board expanded to $50 million in June 2026. That is a small slice of the float, so the flow signal is directional rather than mechanical.
Outlook — what to watch for Intrepid Potash into 2027
Fourth-quarter guidance frames the near-term test. Intrepid guides to potash sales volume of 63,000-73,000 tons at $385-$395 per ton, and Trio sales volume of 83,000-93,000 tons at $385-$395 per ton. Trio's realized-price guide sits below the $408 booked in Q3, which the company attributed to fall fill volumes plus expected product and geographic mix.
Pricing actions are already in motion. In early October, Intrepid ran a one-week Trio fall fill program at a $410 list price for orders shipping by year-end, then raised the Trio list price by $30 to $440 per ton. The company said the program was designed to preposition product ahead of spring application and reduce peak-season logistics risk.
The largest single catalyst is unresolved. Intrepid was selected by the USDA for approximately $139 million in proposed matching funding under the FIELDS program to support a potential sulfate of potash facility near Carlsbad, New Mexico, with planned capacity of roughly 220,000 tons annually. Intrepid said a final investment decision is targeted for late 2027 and that the USDA funding remains subject to completion of the award process and applicable conditions.
A conference call is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on 4 November 2026. The Wendover lithium project, run by the company's partners, continues through engineering and permitting, and Intrepid said it would provide updates as milestones are reached.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Intrepid Potash's Q3 2026 earnings beat mean for retail investors?
Net income from continuing operations of $1.7 million beat the prior-year quarter's $0.7 million, and adjusted EBITDA rose to $11.7 million from $10.7 million. The company held $161.4 million in net cash and short-term investments with no borrowings. For shareholders, the practical read is that profitability improved on flat sales, driven by Trio segment margins rather than revenue growth. This is informational only and not investment advice.
